Searching for Fabric

Man, this city is big!!  Thank you Mr. Taxi Man, bus driver, and tuk-tuk guy for helping us on our quest for the right fabric.  What a treasure hunt!

Back to Bangkok!

Stepped off the train and got smacked in the face by the warm humid air of Bangkok in February… just the welcome back that was needed.  Sure does feel good.  Fresh pineapple, iced coffee, and papaya salad, here we come.

Headed straight to the Biographe Lab to say hi and check in on the operation.  So good to see all the smiling faces again.  Our manager, Wen, and her team surprised us with our new Biographe Blanks logo already printed on a few shirts!

We’ll keep you posted with what Biographe Blanks is all about but for now, we’re still getting settled back in the city we have come to love.  Looking forward to a few action packed days ahead!

Introducing Biographe Beta!

The Blind Project is pleased to announce the launch of Biographe Beta - a limited edition t-shirt line that is used as a training tool to teach survivors of the commercial sex trade a new skill in screen printing, design and production. Biographe Beta goes on sale today!

Each graphic on these limited edition t-shirts is inspired by a woman’s story that has been exploited in the sex trade. Biographe Beta is the culmination of Be a Biographer - an open source design challenge in the summer of 2010 that solicited designers, artists and creative-minded people to tell survivors’ stories through their designs.

This past March, while spending over a month in Bangkok, The Blind Project team worked with NightLight International, our flagship partner, to begin production.  We  hired a manager, accountant and four survivors to create these graphic tees. None of these women had any experience in screen printing, production or design, and now all have marketable job skills.

Biographe Beta is the first step in moving towards our launch of Biographe - a premium fashion brand which will continue to build upon our existing model of employing and empowering survivors of the commercial sex trade in Bangkok, Thailand.  Biographe matters not solely because of what is being created, but how it is being created.

Support our project by purchasing one of these limited edition tees. Simply by making a purchase you are investing in the journey of these four women as they continue to improve their job skills.  Biographe Beta is a limited edition line of t-shirts. Once they’re gone, they’re gone! Don’t miss your opportunity today to be part of the journey and invest in future of these survivors. Buy yours today here!

BETA HAS ARRIVED!

Biographe Lab: Week 3

Team Biographer Wen (Biographe Manager) humbly speaks about the struggles of starting a screen printing business abroad.

It’s only week three Wen! We are confident that she will be able to lead her team to great success as they continue to build their technical skills as screen printers.

Thanks for all the hard work team!

Team Biographer Spotlight: Sheila Harper - Accessories Designer

Sheila Harper, biographer and long standing team member of The Blind Project joined us on our recent work abroad. What we love about Sheila is her attention to detail during the design process and her excitement in teaching others her skills. Sheila spent two fast paced weeks abroad teaching jewelry design workshops while making huge strides sourcing local materials in preparation for the launch of our Biographe accessory line.

Sheila also spent time lending a helping had with TBP’s restorative projects. “She’s not afraid to put down the tools and get her hands dirty doing tasks that maybe aren’t as glamourous, but go a long way in helping our restorative team accomplish work on the ground” says Anthony Dodero.

Sheila grew up in England and graduated from Winchester School of Art in 2004 with a Bachelors in Textile Design.  Born in the Philippines and having lived in India and Pakistan as a child she has seen firsthand some of the economic reasons that hold so many people from a life with dignity and hope.  Sheila has also spent a year doing humanitarian work in eight East Asian countries.  She currently lives in New York City and is excited to contribute her creative skills in textile and jewelry design.
